Sailing the Whitsundays

Art in the Whitsundays GBR

November 2nd, 2018

We are extremely excited to be helping Reef Ecologic with the trialing and research of public artworks at Langford Reef in the Whitsunday section of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Explore Whitsundays has been able to supply a vessel and crews to assist the project, including taking the scientists into the park to complete site assessments.

In August 2018, 4 pieces of art were installed at Langford Reef for a 3 month trial. For the 1st month the artworks were on the beach, allowing visitors to interact with the art out of the water. The second month was intertidal, so the art would go from being submerged to out of the water depending on the tides. In October 2018, the artworks have been placed in 6 metres of water.
Langford Reef Whitsundays Public Artworks Research Project 2018
Langford Reef is a Sand Spit with Fringing Coral Reefs

The artworks provide a dual purpose, allowing visitors to appreciate the works, while also providing habitat for the marine life at the sites, plus a structure, similar to coral substrate to allow corals to establish.

Surveys and research is ongoing to measure the success and ensure that environmental outcomes are positive.  At the same time, policy frameworks for artworks in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park are being developed jointly by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and Queensland National Parks.

Permanent artworks will be placed at sites such as Blue Pearl Bay and Mantaray Bay in 2019. Sculptures will be up to 6m and include Turtles, Manta Rays, Wrasse and even a Coral Polyp.

We look forward to these works provoking conversation and public awareness of the Marine Park.
