Sail Learn to Earn Program Crew Interview

Ben Goulding interview to go sailing
Ben     and    Kylie  (Human Resource Manager)

An Interview with Ben Goulding from
Brighton England - 2 Nov 2012

Ben started the Sail Learn to Earn program on
Monday 8 Oct 2012 and completed the Program
on Thurs 1 Nov 2012

Ben passed the program, received great reviews
from the Sail Training Component and the
consolidation period on the Maxi Yachts.

Ben was employed on Friday 2 Nov 2012 and
commences work on Saturday 3 Nov 2012.

We took the chance to speak with Ben about
the Sail Learn to Earn program and his
comments follow.  We look forward to Bens'
updates as he settles into his new job!

How did you hear about the Sail Learn to Earn Program ?   I was looking at going away after finishing my degree, but all the Gap Year
programs I saw were the same kind of thing.  I saw the LTE program at a
Travel Agency and thought that learning to sail would be new and exciting....
so I signed up straight away
How was the initial 6 Day Sail Training program with Mal Robertson ?   The first week was a great experience getting not only my first taste of
sailing, but the Whitsunday Islands.  It was an action packed 6 days with
Mal encouraging a very hands on approach, throwing you in at the deep
end with how to operate a sailing vessel in addition to teaching the theory
behind what was going on
How did you find the 6 consolidation trips on the Maxis ?   The transition to the Maxi's was a step up, not only in size but learning
how each different boat functioned.  These trips also bought in a new
set of skills, not only in sailing, but the catering and hospitality skills
required to crew a commercial sail boat.
What to you think of the Whitsundays ?   One of the most beautiful places in the world with incredible reefs and
stunning beaches.  Working out here as an LTE has been the best job
I've done.
What do you think of Airlie Beach ?   Has a good party scene and a layed back atmosphere, alternatively if
you want to chill out you can lay by the lagoon and listen to live music,
looking at boats bobbing in the harbour amid beautiful scenery.
How do you feel about starting work ?   Excited to be working on a boat with so much history and looking
forward to scaling the mast and experiencing a different style of sailing.
