Sailing the Whitsundays

Great Barrier Reef Marine Park & Whitsunday Islands.

Whitsunday Islands map and images highlight some of the Whitsunday's iconic
locations that guests travelling with Explore Whitsundays can experience.

On average our 2 or 3 day sailing trips will cover 80 - 100 km's around the Whitsundays.

This example is for:
* 2 Day 2 Night Tours
* 3 Day 2 Night Tours,
* 3 Day 3 Night Tours,

After departure from Abell Point Marina at Airlie Beach we sail:

1. across the Whitsunday Passage to the south end of Hook Island.

2. sail through Hook Passage, between Hook and Whitsunday Island, head south down to Tongue Bay.

3. take walk up to Hill Inlet Lookout and then take boardwalk down to Whitehaven Beach.

4. heading north sail along the western coast of Hook Island to Butterfly Bay for snorkelling.

5. a short passage west, sailing to Blue Pearl Bay on Hayman Island to view marine life and coral beach.

6. short sail to Langford Reef for beach stop and walk to lookout point for great photos.

7. sail south west across the Whitsunday Passage, sail by North Molle Island and return to Abell Point Marina in Airlie Beach.

Itineraries differ from voyage to voyage and are dependant on the weather and tidal conditions and may be the reverse of this example. It is important to note we do not guarantee the tours will visit every location as described above.  Longer itineraries may visit more locations and spend extra time at each location.

Langford Beach is a Sand Spit, accessible when
tides are mid to low. Also has a short island walk
built in 2017 to a viewing area for great photos.
Langford Reef - The Fringing Corals grow close to
the beach which means it is easy to access for
There are 74 Islands in the Whitsundays, however we think that the best part is that 66 of the islands are still in their natural state with no major building developments.  At most you will find a look out point, or a toilet facility, or interpretive signage.

All this means that sailing around the Whitsundays is still a relative voyage of discovery!  The islands are pristine and still look very much as they did when Captain Cook sailed through and named them in June 1770.

On many of the islands, Coral Reefs grow right from the beach which is really good if you are nervous about snorkelling, because you can walk in from the beach and the coral reefs are just metres in.

We are confident the photos you take on your Whitsunday tour will be highlights in your photo collection, whether the images are beaches, islands, sunsets, coral reefs or marine life.

Hill Inlet and Whitehaven Beach.  Yachts anchor in
Tongue Bay, then take a guided walk to the lookout

lookout, guests walk down to the beach

There are fantastic viewing platforms

Whitsundays anchorage, Nara Inlet on Hook Island.

Nara Inlet is a fiord like setting, where yachts sail right up into
the narrows.  Surrounded by large heavily wooded hills makes
for a beautiful scene which is well protected from winds and swell.

Nara Inlet is home to Aboriginal Drawings of the Ngaro People.
