Sailing the Whitsundays

Airlie Beach is the mainland gateway to the
Great Barrier Reef Marine Park & Whitsunday Islands.

Airlie Beach is 1170kms north of Brisbane and 620kms South of Cairns.

If driving from Brisbane, it will take 14 hours to get to Airlie Beach. A good idea is to stop overnight in Rockhampton. From Rockhampton to Airlie Beach takes 5 - 6 hours drive time.
Driving from Cairns to Airlie Beach takes 7 - 8 hours drive time. 

With your travel arrangements, please allow sufficient time to check in at our office in Airlie Beach.

For a morning departure, please check in by 6:30pm the day before, for a 2pm departure, check in by 11.30am on day of departure.

FLYING - Airlie Beach is accessible by plane from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne:

Whitsunday Coast Airport (37 km's from Airlie Beach) - Virgin Blue & Jetstar & TigerAir

Hamilton Island (35 to 50 minute Ferry Ride to Mainland) - Virgin Blue & Jetstar

There is also a direct flight from Cairns to Hamilton Island with Qantaslink

Mackay Airport (170 km's South of Airlie Beach) - QANTAS, JET STAR and VIRGIN BLUE 

  Whitsundays Ferry and Bus transfers

  WHITSUNDAY COAST AIRPORT (also known as Proserpine Airport)  [PPP]

WHITSUNDAY SHUTTLE SERVICE - provide transfers to Airlie Beach that take around 30-35 minutes. The costs are $20 & the shuttle will drop guests to their accommodation, the Marina or our check-in Office. A family of four, is $55.00.  Transfers must be Pre-Booked, please let us know when you book that you would like a transfer arranged.

Coach or taxi transfers to Airlie Beach take around 35 minutes. Coach company is Whitsunday Transit.


When booking a tour with Explore Whitsundays, we can arrange the Ferry & Shuttle Tickets at the same time.

- Fly to Hamilton Island & transfer on a ferry to the mainland. Depending on the route the ferry takes, the island transfers will take from 30 to 50 minutes.  

FERRY TRANSFERS to the mainland are available with:

The Ferry price is $59 per person from Hamilton Island to the mainland. From Abel Point Marina to our office in Airlie Beach is $2.50.  Guests can pay for the ferry and Shuttle Transfer direct to our office can be pre-booked with Resort Connections for $61.50 p/p.

Whitsunday Transit coach services operate to Airlie Beach for $5.00.

An alternative to the Ferry, is a LIGHT PLANE TRANSFER from Hamilton Island to Airlie Beach, available with GSL Island Air Taxis. Phone: +61 (0) 7 4946 9933. Price from $138.00 for two people. Airlie Beach airport is located 4km's from town. Taxi's operate from the airport into town.

  MACKAY AIRPORT  153kms from Airlie Beach

- Another alternative is to fly to Mackay.  Mackay Airport is 153kms to the south of Airlie Beach.  To drive to Airlie Beach from Mackay will take around 2 hours following the Bruce Highway to Proserpine, then turning right at Proserpine towards Airlie Beach.  One Way car hire is an option, contact Avis, Hertz, Europcar.

Our Whitsunday Sailing Tours Include: Service of Captain and Crew, Meals, Snorkelling Equipment,
Wet Suit hire, Linen (please bring Beach Towel), Marine & National Park Fees. The following tours 
also include Local Transfers from Airlie Beach to the Marina and return: Solway Lass, 
Whitsunday Bliss & Day Tours on Southern Cross, Seasprints Whitsunday Bullet and Express. 
Itineraries can change based on weather and sea conditions and guest safety.

Please pack in a small soft bag. Note most vessels have limited storage space. 
No trolley bags can be taken on board.  
  Solway Lass, Prima and Adventurer do not allow bags with zips on board. 
 Large Bags can be stored at our office in Airlie Beach for a small fee. 

 Whitsunday Bliss does allow for larger soft sided bags. NO trolley bags please.

 What to Pack: 
Swimmers, hat, sunglasses, personal toiletries, beach towel, runners or sandals for the island walks.

 Alcohol: Solway Lass has a licenced bar on-board, so no BYO.
Drinks are sold at reasonable prices.  
 All other vessels
guests can BYO Alcohol and store in the esky on board.
